Take the Hands On Advice on Car Care!
1) Do not use dish soap or any other household soap when washing your car. This kind of soap has harsh detergents in them for breaking down grease and these kinds of detergents will also remove all remaining wax that you have on your paint.
2) When washing your car, Do not use an old rag, shirt, sock, dish towel, or any other kind of towel. These will all leave swirl marks in your paint as they do not trap dirt particles deep in the fibers keeping them away from the auto’s finish. Instead it keeps the sand particles on the top of the fibers where they scratch your paint with every wipe. Use a microfiber wash mitt like Hands On doesn't leave scratches and swirls.
3) When drying your car, use only a chamois or microfiber towel, regular bath towels and other towels will leave lint, and worse of all are not very soft and will scratch your paint leaving those dreaded swirl and scratch and spider web look. I can't say enough for microfiber towels, they are the softest towels, and highly recommended for auto detailing. Hands On uses microfiber wash mitts, drying towels, polishing towels, window towels, and interior cleaning towels. They are a bit expensive at $2-$4 for a window towel, and $10-$15 for a drying towel. They cannot be washed with your other laundry, wash separate, do not use dryer sheets or fabric softener with these.
4) Eliminate a lot of the damage you cause while washing your vehicle by taking off rings, watches and belts. Hands On uses a microfiber apron while polishing and waxing your exterior as not to rub against your finish with my clothes.
5) When able, do not pressure wash your car, this might be ok for a driveway or a house or a deck, but would you pressure wash your baby? The clear coat on your auto’s finish is very thin and soft, pressure cleaning pushes the sand granules into and across the paint like sandpaper leaving scratches. The end result is a clean auto, but with new scratches, professional detailers who are high-end and not in a rush to get you done, will hand wash with a microfiber mitt.
6) Too many times I’ve heard new car owners tell me that they thought they didn’t have to wax or seal there paint because today's paint jobs are maintenance free. As a Professional Detailer of Paint restoration, this can't be more wrong. Your auto will come new with a cheap layer of wax from the dealer that will last 30-60 days, you know you're in need of wax when water doesn’t bead into little individual droplets but just drains off. Hands On uses a buffer to apply Wax that will last 3-4 months. If you desire longer protection Hands On carries a 6-9 month paint protection sealant that bonds to your vehicle’s paint unlike wax which slowly disappears with each wash, and in harsh environments such as Michigan, Ohio. The 2 vital times to wax or paint seal are in April and October. April because your coming out of winter and the harsh winter has eaten your protection (if you had any going into winter) or if not, has had all winter to contaminate your paint causing more serious problems and more time and money to remedy it. And as stated, October because your going into winter and you need the protection through it.
7) Car covers and bike covers and front end bras are no good. Dust, dirt, and grit will get under these covers, lay on the painted surface and the cover on top will move and cause a sanding motion like a hand moving sand across paint. If your paint is waxed or sealed you will not need a cover. All you will need is a microfiber duster or microfiber towel to dust it off with no harm.
8) Paint chips. I see them on almost every vehicle I work on. Sometimes I know the owner is aware of them and wants them cured because I can see the touch up paint all over the car. I know they meant well but they are not using the correct paint, or system to repair these. The paint Hands On uses for paint chip repair is made by PPG. PPG is the manufacture of auto paint in the United States. They spent years to formulate a special repair paint that would sit in the chip or scratch without having that blob, and would come off the paint around the damage as to blend in much better. More importantly then the cosmetic reason to fix your paint chips is if you don’t they will start to rust. Once again a small problem that I can fix will grow into a body shop priming and re-painting your paint chip/scratch areas for 10 times what the repair would of cost when it was just chips and scratches.
9) When selling your auto privately, or trading it in at a dealership, or returning a leased auto always get it detailed first. Here is why, Detailed autos always sell faster and for more money. The $90-$230 you spend will bring you back 3 times what it cost you. I’ve seen a car not sell for $2200, and after a $230 complete detail it sold in under 3 days for $3000. For lease returns, the dealership will charge you for scuffs, scratches, paint chips, any marks on the paint generally. These charges usually add up to $500-$2500. A complete detail with spot compounding to remove the deep scratches before you return it will save you a ton of cash. When trading in your auto, a clean detailed car will always be appraised in excellent or good shape instead of the general classification of fair or poor. This classification is made visually only, by the used car manager. A clean engine compartment, along with a mirror shine free of blemishes will get you that upper classification and save you hundreds over what you paid for a detail.
